"In reality opposites are one; art shows this." -Eli Siegel

Barbara Singer, photographer, actor, and author, was born on January 29, 1927 in New York City. She worked as a portrait and stock photographer beginning in 1983, but in large part due to her study of Aethetic Realism, recently shifted her focus to fine art photography. Her images have been published widely in the United States and abroad.

After receiving a degree in biology from NYU in 1947, Barbara Singer started her career as a radiographer and mammographer. In 1944 while still at univerisity, she became interested and began studing Aesthetic Realism with its founder, the great American poet and philosopher Eli Siegel. She passionately continues her study today at the Aesthetic Realism Foundation. Aesthetic Realism and her 1956 marriage to photographer and poet Nat Herz helped cultivate an interest in photography and the arts.

With a desire for a creative outlet, Barbara Singer began her own career as a photographer in 1983 and since then has had much success. In 1990 she was a Photographers' Forum Finalist. She received the Beaux Arts Society Photography Award in 1994 and a fiscal sponsorship by NY Foundation For the Arts in 2000. She is featured in United States and the World Face to Face by Maximillien de Lafayette, 2006.

Barbara Singer also owns the rights to and manages the archive of her late husband, the photographer and poet Nat Herz (1920-1964). In 1999, she edited and published The Impossible Landscapes of Nat Herz and Kurt Seligmann, a book of surrealist poems and drawings created in 1944. She is currently producing With the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom August 26, 1963 by Nat Herz. In 2007, she completed a book of verse called A Love Odyssey. She won the E.F.S. poetry award in their 1999 Annual Writing Competition.

In 2007, Barbara Singer began another career as an actor, further challenging her as a artist and person. She won Best Actress at Tropfest NY 2008 for her role in Mrs. Jones. For more information about Barbara Singer's acting career, visit Barbara Singer Actor.
